• National Development will follow the Biyagama Model - President Shares His Vision with Delgoda Residents.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized that it was crucial to remember how, during the impeachment of the former president; Ranasinghe Premadasa defended both him and the United National Party. This defense was instrumental in protecting the lives of many individuals associated with the Podujana Peramuna and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party during the 2022 unrest. The President made this statement at a public meeting held this afternoon (17) in Delgoda.

Reflecting on his political journey, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the development program he initiated in Biyagama, which laid the foundation for his career. He noted that the benefits of this development are now enjoyed by everyone, independent of political affiliations.

Looking forward, the President expressed his goal of advancing the country by establishing investment zones across the nation, following the Biyagama model. He extended an invitation to all, irrespective of party lines, to unite in this national effort.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe further added addressing the crowd:

“We must now embark on a journey for our country. In 2022, when no one was willing to take on the responsibility, I stepped in to lead the government. I took on the crucial task of ensuring the survival of our people during a time when our economy had collapsed, leaving us without food, medicine, and fuel.

At that moment, my focus was not on political parties. If we had prioritized party politics, Sri Lanka might not exist today. I assumed the presidency and worked to unite everyone to stabilize our economy. As a result, we have addressed the fundamental issues facing our people, and today, our country is a place where people can live with hope.

Although it was a challenging task, we accepted it and made progress. We have now systematically provided relief to our citizens and are working to further ease their burdens in the coming year.

The people of Sri Lanka have hope for a better future, and I am committed to meeting those expectations. We need to realize our vision of creating a new economy for this country. I am determined to bring the same level of development to Sri Lanka that I achieved in Biyagama. Biyagama now boasts a thriving foreign exchange-earning economy. Before 1977, the primary livelihood here was beedi wrapping, and many doubted Biyagama's potential for development. However, I succeeded in transforming it. Today, Biyagama is home to several trading zones, and every household has the potential to generate income—a situation not yet found in many other parts of Sri Lanka.

Our next goal is to provide Biyagama with essential infrastructure, including the construction of hospitals at Bella Kapapu Handiya. Biyagama will also benefit from a new, well-designed playground. We have exhausted all immediate improvements in the area, so my next plan is to develop a new trade zone on a 120-acre plot in Keragala. Additionally, as the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery is relocated to Trincomalee, we plan to establish a new technology city at that site.

The development we have achieved in Biyagama has been beneficial to everyone, independent of politics. Our goal is to replicate this model across the country. I also aim to establish a university in Biyagama to further enhance its role as a development hub.

Having successfully demonstrated the potential of Biyagama, it is time to extend this approach to other provinces. I encourage all supporters of the United National Party to continue backing our current initiatives. Please cast your vote on September 21 for the gas cylinder.

I remind United National Party members that I was instrumental in saving former President Ranasinghe Premadasa from impeachment. True supporters of the United National Party should stand with us now.

To the people of the SLPP  and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, remember the past. Many lives were preserved from 1999 to 2022 because I took over and stabilized the country. The votes cast for Sajith and Namal are effectively votes for Anura. I urge everyone to support us by casting their vote for the gas cylinder on September 21.”

The event was attended by Maha Sangha, State Minister Sisira Jayakody, Former Minister Ruwan Wijewardene, political leaders of the area, and a large number of people.
